So, what about the tree?

Why are we using a tree photo on this website?  Although it may seem rather unconnected with campus infrastructure, the tree has much in common with it.  A tree is usually known for its function whether it is producing fruit or nuts, providing shade or becoming the stuff of which homes and furniture are made.

The tree in winter, however, exhibits a rather different aspect.  We see the parts of the tree that are hidden during the time of year that most people gather outdoors.  These are the parts that provide nutrients and support for the leaves, protect the fruit from hungry animals, and move the patiently collected energy of the summer sun to safe underground winter storage.  In effect, we see the tree's infrastructure during the winter.  Most people never see the infrastructure of a college campus, but it is certainly no less important than the trunk and branches are to the tree.

What, exactly, is infrastructure?

Infrastructure is the basic structure or features of a system or organization. By structure we mean the interrelation or arrangement of parts in a complex entity, at least when we are looking at structure as one characteristic of something.  An example would be distinguishing the form of a tree from its appearance or usefulness.  We mean something made up of a number of parts that are held or put together in a particular way when we use the term to distinguish, say, a dam from a river delta.  By system, we mean the instrumentality that combines interrelated interacting artifacts designed to work as a coherent entity.  Whew!  Beating the system, then, would be a severe critique of the design.
